How To Do The The Turnover Pass: EVERYTHING You Need To Know

The invisible paths or the Herman paths, which is the turnover path, right? So in the classic past, the packets are doing that in the turnover pass, the packets are doing this and, and what’s nice about the turnover pass is a lot easier to get invisible because of the turnover actually covers the past in that direction. And a lot of people can get it looking deceptive a lot sooner. Right? So Richie, I would, for starters, I would get ahold of the out jog Herman paths lesson if you want, you know, Alex, do you think we could do a 10 minute teach on this? It seems like you could cover the basics here in 10 minutes. Totally. Okay. So Richie, um, here we go there there’s a lot more I want to say. There’s a lot more to be said on this. It’s definitely the kind of thing that uh, can be worked on a lot, but I can give you the key points to practice here and I think it’ll be really helpful. So let’s say you have a break about halfway up

Do you want to bring the cards down to uh, dealing position slamming to the right, slamming to the front so they’re slanted 45 degrees forward, 45 degrees rightward then you probably want to turn 45 degrees this way you want to take your right hand and you want to get a nice deep grip, much deeper than most people would think. When I’m in this position, I have a tendency to have it above the joint of the first finger. You can see how high up it is on the thumb and the outer packet is touching the cards below the base of the fingers on that side. And that’s important because it’ll feel strange. But you’ll notice that this is a lot like the gravity half past grip and the bluff past grip. But it gives you a lot of space right here, gives you an awful lot of space.

Speaker 2 (04:50):

And that’s important because you’re going to need that space to cover the move. Now this thing is done in a lot of different ways, but I would certainly say that the, the way I’ve got it worked out in the gravity half pass is a, is the same thing, right? So whether I’m doing the gravity half pass or I’m doing the turnover pass, the left hand action is the same. Okay? So, and that is this. And remember everything is to the right and forward 45 degrees. My ag elbows are normally up, but in teaching each position that ends up being useful. So here’s what’s going to happen. I’m going to bring everything up to this angle. Just remember everything I’m talking about is to the right and down, but I’m going to show it to you from this angle. Okay?

Speaker 2 (05:43):

You’re going to let those cards a hinge down to what would be a 95 90 degree angle, right? Of course everything’s already like that, but in 90 degree angle to the deck, the fingers don’t move at all and until that point at all. Then at that point, the pinky curls around that bottom part and it’s just going to stabilize the cards and act like a hinge and the first finger is just going to extend to the right behind the right fingers like that. And that’s going to trip those cards over that first finger like this.

Speaker 2 (06:20):

So you’re down here that can’t be seen at all and it only takes a moment. And this is the essence of the gravity half pass and the essence of the right hand grip for the Herman path. Again, everything tilts all the way down until it’s literally on edge. And then once it’s on edge, the pinky in the first finger move at the same time and it’s totally invisible and thanks to your right hand grip, it can’t be seen. Now at that point, everyone has no idea that the thing is even started, but in actuality it’s all but over, right? So at that point to finish up a, it could be too tight. You could just bring that thumb over and turn these cards over on top of the deck. That would happen under the right hand. So you wouldn’t see it. It would look like this.

right. But uh, what I’ve been teaching people lately in class is to slide the thumb along to the edge at the same time. That opens your fingers, it gives you more space and as you do that, press the left edge of the cards so that the right edge slides down the deck.

Speaker 2 (07:36):

So you’ve got a hinge. And again, that whole action seems to take a moment and can’t be seen. It goes much slower when I’m trying to explain it. Right? But that’s what it looks like. Then as my right hand, let’s go. My left hand moves over and closes those on top as I take the deck with my thumb above and my fingers below, so again, assuming that I’m starting in my right hand, you have much more cover. If you bring the cards to your left hand and go into the shift at that point, turn the deck over and it looks like absolutely nothing happens and that’s the turnover pass in seven minutes or less.

That’s the thing that I’ve seen most people have success with as once they integrate this stuff and then come back and refresh you is the fact that you have this mastermind and then we can keep on zoning in, get you to a place that it’s working. Yeah, no, absolutely. Yeah. I’ve been actually working on your fall shuffle you taught us. Oh, nice. Awesome. We did a couple of years ago, we did an event called your miracle class closer than you think. Both the classic and turnover paths are covered. I would think that the explanation you got today on the turnover pass would be a more up to date. Okay. Ah, okay. Okay. Excellent. All the time.

But that, that showed that I just put a link in in uh, right there. Grab that, copy that or just, or just look up pass in the back room. Just search past, he does talk about, uh, path practice, lots of applications, understanding the positions and the actions. Um, tightening up the bolts, he calls it. And um, there’s a lot in this, in this, I think this is really great training for anybody who’s really just wanting to get a, an early understanding of the, of all the passes. Because what you’ll find, what’s great about what Aaron’s teaching is that, that, that action, he’s, he’s telling you the truth. It’s the same as the same action for the half pass and you’re going to find it for various other passes that you may use and may discover along the way. And once you get that basic sort of grip and handling down, it’s going to make tackling almost all passes so much easier. So Aaron’s teaching on that really is the way to go.

Speaker 1 (10:21):

Yeah, no, that was beautiful. Um, if I know we’re going to get ready to leave soon, if, if I can ask one more question, um, how do you guys introduce yourself when you’re in, when you’re getting ready to perform? Is that too much right now?

No, it’s not too much. Um, so yeah. So you mean when, when you’re approaching, uh, when you’re approaching people or when you’re in what situation?

Speaker 1 (10:50):

Yeah, I mean, for me at the bar, I have no problem doing it cause everybody knows me by that. And I have my regulars. Uh, it’s more about like parlor, you know, how do you do it? Let me ask you, how do you do it at the bar when it’s a brand new walking customer that you’ve never met? Uh, well then it’s easy cause you know, first I, you know, take care of business, you know, I can make sure I get their drinks and everything first. But then what, what do you do then? I seize the opportunity when I see them waiting for the fruit or soft in and I’ll, I’ll, I’ll just pay them with, I won’t talk. Um, I do, I’m Sean Mullen saw teaching on the Burton and restored napkin. But what do you say? Like, what, like, like do you walk up and say, Hey, watch this or what do you say?

Speaker 1 (11:35):

No, actually I won’t say anything. Um, I just, I’ll like, I’ll put the napkin down in front of them as like, Oh, I don’t like this napkin. And I don’t tell them I’m a magician if they’re new. Um, or if their friends aren’t coming in. Shawn’s introducing me to them. Um, I’ll just, it’s kinda like a carbon arrow on his show. I play the bartender and it’s like, Oh, this snapped, you know, like this napkin. And it’s like, Oh wait, this is, this isn’t one of those fireproof napkins. And then that’s how I introduced myself as a magician by doing the trick, without telling them I’m a magician. There it is. That’s it. Do that. That’s wonderful. And then from there, they see something amazing. That’s, that’s where you start. You start where the mystery is and you say, that’s what I’m about. This is what I’m here to do, you know, and I’m friendly, you know, I can’t wait to hang out with you.

Speaker 1 (12:23):

I think if you capture all of those in the essence of what you’re saying, that’s pretty much it. They just want to know that you’re safe and that they’re going to have fun hanging out with you. You know, cause I want to get into that parlor stage next. Uh, I want to start, you know, performing, you know, uh, getting to, we have a lot of local breweries and I’m trying to work on things for, in that theme. Um, but like, you know, if I show up there, you know, I’ve gotten some gigs and parties and stuff and to me that was my biggest obstacle actually, was getting, introducing myself to the whole crowd. Like, you know, just making that connection right from the get go, you know, bam, you know, pay attention to me now. Nothing like a real good strong effect to do that. Just to establish credibility before you say anything. I think that’s a wonderful way of going about it. Richie, I think you’re doing a okay. All right.

Yeah. Richard Dane. Uh, I don’t, maybe you got, maybe you got in a little late. I had asked at the, at the very beginning. Uh, one more thing. Now hold on one, one more thing. I want to say Richie. You’ve got it. You’ve got this thing about you where you’re interesting and people are going to want to hear what you have to say. So, so I wouldn’t stress too much about it. We can give you some lines and stuff later on. But I just think if you just always just use your, your natural, what comes natural to you in your mind, whether it’s hello or Hey, how are you doing? Whatever it is, you’re going to be fine.

Well, David Gregory says, and we’re going to go a give way to the member jam session and I’m guessing that uh, there’ll be plenty of discussion, uh, there where you can, uh, get into the dribble pass. What’s your take on the dribble pass out of curiosity? I mean, I think, uh, there’s different kinds of, you can do a pass in any kind of situation. You can add it to referrals, you can add it to cuts, you know, if your dribble passes. A lot of people like to use the dribble pass as a control. Um, I think there’s no reason not to. If you really like to, you know, I think, uh, once I’m using the dribble, uh, I personally don’t include a pass in the dribble. I would personally do the past a moment or two later or a different control from the dribble. I think, uh, in a lot of cases people do the dribble pass because they feel like it’s a way to make the past look okay.

Speaker 2 (16:07):

Um, and it’s fine cause that is a way to make the past look okay. But, uh, that’s why I don’t, don’t, uh, lean on it much. Right. Uh, what I actually did see recently was that Shawn Mullins did that false cut where the cards are placed in the past like that. Right. And you could place the cards anywhere. And to me that was sort of a lot like the dribble pass action, right. Uh, because you know, you’re coming up through the past, right. But to me the dribble is such a big action. Uh, it could cover anything and that’s fine. So when I do a dribble, I don’t like to actually do a slight, I just like to bury the cards cleanly. And that’s totally personal taste. Right. Adam.
